LuxPro PSP722E Everything Stat Programmable Thermostat Review by Stevo F

I purchased my 1st Lux PSP722e thermostat in January, 2009 mainly because of the functionality to adjust the "swing rate"- sensitivity to how much the temperature the thermostat is set for deviates from the actual temperature. The Honeyell thermostat I replaced proabalby varied no more than 1/4 degree from the set point, so if it was set to heat to 72 degrees, it would kick the heat on at 71.75 and heat until 72.25 then shut off. Something this sensitive meant it was shutting on and off every 5 minutes on a very cold or very hot day. With the PSP722e, I can set a 1/2 or 3/4 degree swing rate, which allows for longer cycle times, less energy used to constantly keep starting my heat pump, and less wear and tear on the unit.

Installation was not difficult and since the 1st one worked well, I immediately ordered a second thermostat to replace the non-programmable thermostat for my downstairs.

I have noticed slightly lower electric bills in the winter since installing these, and I like the autochange feature, as well as the filter change reminder.

So far I haven't even had to change the battery on either unit, and hopefully they will provide many years of service. even though it is not one of the bigger names in thermostats.

LuxPro PSP722E Everything Stat Programmable Thermostat Review by R. Simmons (Houston, TX USA)

I have had the LuxPro PSP722E installed in my house since June 2010, and I am very pleased with it. Here are some of the things I like about it:

** It has an excellent user manual. Every feature is described accurately (though succinctly), and the instructions are easy to follow. You can download the user manual from the Lux website: [...]

** Entering a program is fairly easy, but the COPY function is what really makes it a snap. You just program a day, and then copy that day's program to any (or all) other days that have the same program. You can program the weekend separately, and you can program every day of the week separately if you wish.

** The smart recovery feature allows the thermostat to anticipate an upcoming change in the night-to-morning or day-to-evening program and have your house at the new temperature when you get up in the morning or arrive home from work in the evening.

** The heating/cooling usage for today and yesterday are recorded, so it is possible to keep a record of how much your system is on. Keeping such a record will allow you to see the effect of energy conservation measures you take.

** It also records how much time the fan is on and will prompt you to change the filter when that time reaches a limit you specify.

** Further, you can program the fan separately (if you want) to run during periods when the A/C or heat isn't being used enough to move air through your filter.

** I like that the control of when the heating/cooling comes on is specified in terms of a temperature swing (with an additional swing for a 2nd stage) rather than in terms of the number of cycles per hour (which is what the well-known brand uses).

** Although the thermostat comes from the factory with the display temperature calibrated, it disagreed (by about 1 degree) with a thermometer I hung next to it, so using the "calibration" feature, I could make the thermostat read the same thing as my thermometer.

** The vacation hold feature lets you set the thermostat to a temperature outside your comfort range for a period of days when you will be away from your house. The day-count is decremented every 24 hours, and when it gets to zero, the thermostat resumes its normal program. Your house can be at a pleasant temperature when you return.

Here are some things which could be improved:

** The thermostat itself does not appear to be as high quality as you'd find in the more well-know brand. I had some trouble seating the front of the device to the back when I installed it, and I dread the time when I will have to change the batteries. Nothing has broken (yet), so I may be unduly pessimistic.

** In spite of my praise of the user manual, one thing that was omitted was when the "vacation hold" actually starts. By trial and error I determined that the day count decrements every 24 hours at the time you set the hold (not at midnight, which is what I was told by a Lux support person).

** It would be nice (though complicated) if you could set the start times for the four periods of the day differently for heating than for cooling. This is probably a minor inconvenience for people that live by the clock, but for us retired folks who rise and set with the sun, it means changing the morning start time several times during the year.

Lux calls this their "Everything 'Stat", and that is not an unreasonable claim.

This excellent thermostat is exactly as advertised and much easier to install and operate than other reviews would have you believe.
